The Seabattle at Methoni

194 years ago, during the Greek war of Independence against the Turks, the moral of the Greek rebels was completely to the ground. The rebellion that started with great energy, was beaten down by the cruel opponents. At this crucial moment the Commander Andreas Miaoulis of the strong fleet of the island Hydra made a plan to attack the enemy. Off the coast of Methoni was a part of the Egyptian fleet at anchor, ready to carry out new attacks and massacres on the Peloponnese. At favorable wind and with the help of a lot of gunfight  a number of men in small boats managed to set the Egyptian ships on fire. They perished miserably with many losses to Egyptian side; the Greek men members no loss. This success was a boost for the moral of the Greek insurgents although it could not avoid the Egyptian-Ottoman Alliance battle with even more violence. It’s an event for Methoni what they want to commemorate; This is the second year that there are festivities on april 30, the day of the seabattle of Methoni. Just like last year Jan took part in the event with our boat. Along with other small ships they had the task to make ‘chaos’ at the enemy with torches and fireworks so the ‘firelighters’ could do their jobs. Below a photo impression.
